Alfred Round, Age 46

Private, 22127, 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment).

Sherwood Foresters
Sherwood Foresters Cap Badge.

Alfred had been born in Doseley as previously stated, he was the son of Alfred Rounds brother, he had married Jane, and at some point moved to Newhall in Derbyshire, probably to get work as he was a miner by profession.

In September 1916 he was with his battalion on the Some in positions just to the West of Guillemont facing a strong German position known as the Quadrilateral which was 750 yards east of Ginchy with the Morval rd on one side and the Guillemont/Combles railway line on the other.

On the 13th Sept B & C company’s attacked the Quadrilateral with A & D companies in reserve some ground and prisoners were taken but two days later the Battalion was asked to support an attack by the 1st Leicesters which again succeeded in taking a bit more of the German trench system. Finally on the 18th September 1916 the position was taken by the 6th Division and on the same day the 2nd Notts & Derby’s were withdrawn to Maltz Horn Farm.

But it was too late for Alfred who had been killed in action a day earlier on September 17th 1916, His body was never recovered and his name like so many others is on the Thiepval memorial to the missing on Pier & Face 10C, 10D & 11A
